Lentinellus cochleatus (Pers. ex Fr.) Karst. syn. Lentinus cochleatus (Pers. ex Fr.) Fr. Aniszäling Lentine en colimaçon Aniseed Cockleshell. Cap 2–6cm across, irregularly funnel-shaped, flesh-colour to reddish-brown. Stem 20–50 x 8–15mm, central or lateral, often rooting, reddish-brown darkening towards the base. Flesh pinkish, tough. Taste mild, smell of aniseed. Gills decurrent, pale flesh-coloured. Spore print white. Spores subglobose, amyloid, 4.5–5 x 3.5–4um. Habitat tufted on stumps of deciduous trees. Season late summer to late autumn. Uncommon. Edible. Distribution, America and Europe.
